Using This Preset Well

This wheel picks what a student does with a vocabulary word. The default eight tasks are Define it, Use in sentence, Synonym, Antonym, Draw it, Act it out, Word origin, and Related words. The word itself comes from somewhere else: the teacher reads it out, or a second wheel loaded with the week's word list picks it. The lesson then runs like this. Teacher says the word, a student spins, and the class does the task. Draw it and Act it out get younger classes moving; Word origin and Related words push older students toward a dictionary. Because the task is random, students have to know each word in several ways rather than memorizing one definition, and a review of 15 words takes about 20 minutes with no worksheet to prepare or mark.

Setup checklist

  • Replace the tasks with the ones that suit your class. A language class might add Translate it and Pronounce it.
  • Open a second wheel with the word list, or keep the list on the board, since this wheel only picks the task.
  • Remove Antonym when the word list is mostly nouns, because many nouns have no useful opposite.

How to read the result

Each task has a 1 in 8 chance per spin and the same task can come up repeatedly. That is usually fine, but turn on Remove winner if you want a student to do all eight tasks with one word. The wheel does not know the word, so it cannot tell that Act it out is a poor fit for "photosynthesis". A teacher can re-spin when the pairing makes no sense.

Limits

The wheel holds tasks, not words, and cannot check definitions, sentences, or synonyms for accuracy. Word origin needs a dictionary or a device in the room. If you would rather the wheel hold the words themselves, the spelling word practice wheel is set up for that.
