Using This Preset Well

This wheel picks one group label at random from a short list: Group A, Group B, Group C, and Group D by default. It does not take a class roster and split it into teams. What it does is settle which group something happens to, or which group a single student joins, in a way the whole class can watch. A common use is station rotation. A teacher with four activity stations spins once per student, reads out the label, and that student walks to the matching station. Another is choosing which of four project groups presents first, cleans up first, or gets to pick the next read-aloud. Rename the labels to Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow for PE, or to the actual names of your groups so nobody has to remember which letter they are.

Setup checklist

  • Change the four labels to match the groups you already use, and add a fifth or sixth entry if your class is split that way.
  • To fill groups evenly, spin once per student and remove a label from the wheel as soon as that group reaches its size limit. For 24 students and 4 groups, that is 6 per group.
  • Keep Remove winner off when you are assigning students, since every group needs to stay available until it is full.

How to read the result

With four labels at equal weight, each spin gives every group a 25 percent chance. That means early spins can pile several students into the same group. Spinning per student produces a random but not necessarily balanced split unless you remove full groups as you go, as described above. If you want a truly even split with no bookkeeping, a numbered list and a count-off is faster. The wheel is for the moments when watching the spin matters more than speed.

Limits

This preset does not know who your students are, cannot balance groups by reading level or behavior, and cannot keep friends apart or together. Teachers who need deliberate mixes should build the groups by hand and use the wheel only for the neutral decisions, such as which group goes first. Because the wheel saves in the browser, clear it before a colleague uses the same device with a different set of labels.

Yes! This wheel works great for elementary, middle school, high school, and even college classrooms. You can customize the content to match your students' age and needs.

Can I project this on my classroom smartboard?

Absolutely! The wheel displays beautifully on smartboards, projectors, and interactive whiteboards. Just open it in your browser and go fullscreen for the best experience.
