Discussion Role Assigner Wheel
Better discussions! Spin to assign roles for group discussions.
Perfect For
Using This Preset Well
This wheel assigns roles for a group discussion. The default eight are Facilitator, Note taker, Timekeeper, Devil's advocate, Summarizer, Question asker, Connector, and Presenter. These are the roles used in literature circles, Socratic seminars, and structured group work where every student needs a job so the talkative ones do not do everything. The routine is one spin per student within a group, with Remove winner on so each role is given once. A group of four uses four of the eight roles; remove the ones you do not need before spinning or accept that some roles will be unused. Because the wheel hands out the roles, a student who always ends up as note taker gets a turn as facilitator, and the teacher does not have to manage the politics of who gets what.
Setup checklist
- Trim the list to the number of students in each group, keeping the roles that matter most for the task.
- Explain each role before spinning. Devil's advocate in particular needs a clear brief so it does not become an excuse to be difficult.
- Turn on Remove winner so no group ends up with two timekeepers and no facilitator.
How to read the result
Each remaining role is equally likely on every spin, and the last student in a group gets whatever role is left. That is fair across the group but means the final assignment was not random. If a role such as Presenter carries more weight, spin for that one first so everyone had an equal chance at it. The wheel does not remember previous sessions, so rotation across weeks is up to the teacher.
Limits
The wheel cannot judge which student is ready for which role. A student with a stammer may not want Presenter, and a shy student may need support as Facilitator. Assign those deliberately and use the wheel for the rest. It also cannot split a class into groups; do that first, then spin within each group.
