Using This Preset Well

This wheel picks a book genre. The default eight are Fantasy, Mystery, Science Fiction, Biography, Adventure, Historical Fiction, Poetry, and Graphic Novel. It is for the moment in library time when a student says they do not know what to read, or always reads the same thing. Spin, and they go to that shelf and pick any book from it. Teachers run a term-long version as genre bingo: each student spins once two weeks, reads a book from the result, and marks it off, so by the end of the term most students have read five or six genres they would not have chosen. It works for adult book clubs and reading challenges too, where the point is the same: a random genre breaks a habit without anyone having to argue for it.

Setup checklist

  • Add Non-Fiction, Horror, Romance, or Humor if your library shelves them separately. The default list is short on purpose.
  • Remove genres your school library does not stock, so a spin never sends a student to an empty shelf.
  • Turn on Remove winner for a reading challenge so each student gets a different genre every round.

How to read the result

Each genre has a 1 in 8 chance per spin, and results are independent, so a student can land on Poetry twice in a row unless Remove winner is on. The wheel chooses a genre, not a title. It knows nothing about reading levels, so a nine year old spinning Science Fiction still needs help finding a book at the right level.

Limits

The wheel has no connection to a library catalog and cannot check what is on the shelf, what is age-appropriate, or what the student has already read. Genre boundaries are also fuzzy, so decide beforehand whether a graphic novel of a fantasy story counts as either. This page replaces an older preset with the same name that listed Non-Fiction instead of Graphic Novel; add it back if you preferred that list.
