Book Report Topic Wheel

Perfect For
Using This Preset Well
This wheel picks the format of a book report. The default eight are Character analysis, Alternative ending, Movie trailer script, Letter to author, Theme essay, Timeline poster, Comic version, and Interview characters. Each one asks the student to show they understood the book in a different way, and none of them is a plain summary, which is the point. The usual pattern is that each student spins after finishing their novel and gets their format from the wheel. A class of 30 ends up with a mix of essays, posters, scripts, and comics instead of 30 summaries, and the class presentation day is more interesting for it. Some teachers spin once for the whole class instead, so everyone does an alternative ending for the class novel and the results can be compared.
Setup checklist
- Have a short brief and a rubric ready for every format before anyone spins. A comic and a theme essay need different marking criteria.
- Remove formats that do not fit the book. Interview characters is hard with a non-fiction title.
- Decide whether a student may re-spin once. Some teachers allow one re-spin so nobody is stuck with a format they find impossible.
How to read the result
Each format has the same 1 in 8 chance. Formats are not equal in effort: a timeline poster and a theme essay take different amounts of time and different skills. If that matters for grading, set expected lengths per format in the brief, or use weights so the heavier formats come up less often. The wheel does not record who got which format, so note it when the spin happens.
Limits
The wheel cannot match a format to a student's strengths or to the book they read, and it does not come with instructions or examples for any format. Students who struggle with drawing or writing need an accommodation planned in advance, not after the spin lands on Comic version.
