Writing Prompt Wheel
Beat writer's block with random prompts! Spin for creative writing starters that inspire stories, essays, and journal entries.
Perfect For
Using This Preset Well
This wheel picks a writing prompt stem. The default eight are open-ended starters: A Day As..., If I Could..., The Mystery of..., My Greatest Adventure, A Letter To..., The World in 2050, An Unexpected Friend, and The Secret Door. Each one leaves the rest of the idea to the writer, which is why they work for ages 8 to 18 with the same list. The usual routine is a ten-minute free write at the start of an English lesson: spin once, everyone writes on the same stem, and two or three volunteers read theirs out. Some teachers let each student spin for their own prompt instead, so a table of five ends up with five different stories to compare. It also covers journal time, homework starters, and creative writing clubs that need a new idea every week.
Setup checklist
- Add stems that fit the unit you are teaching. If the class is studying persuasive writing, add two or three persuasive starters.
- Set a time limit and a word target before the spin so the prompt leads to writing rather than discussion.
- Turn on Remove winner if you spin every day, so the class works through all eight before any repeat.
How to read the result
Every stem has the same chance per spin. A stem is a starting point, not an assignment: A Letter To... could become a letter to a grandparent, a future self, or a character in a novel the class is reading. Students should understand that the wheel picks the door, and they decide what is behind it. The wheel does not evaluate, score, or store what anyone writes.
Limits
The preset has no rubric, no example responses, and no grade-level filter. Some stems, such as A Letter To..., can prompt very personal writing, so decide in advance whether responses will be shared aloud. This page also replaces the older Creative Writing Prompt preset; add its sentence starters, such as What if... or One day..., if you preferred that style.
