Debate Topic Picker Wheel
Practice persuasion and critical thinking! Spin for debate topics that encourage students to explore different perspectives.
Perfect For
Using This Preset Well
This wheel picks a debate topic. The default eight are labels rather than full motions: Social Media Age, Homework Value, School Uniforms, Technology in Class, Year-Round School, Sports Importance, Video Game Effects, and Privacy vs Safety. Each one is a subject that students aged 11 to 18 already have opinions about, which makes them good for practice debates where the goal is learning the format rather than researching for a week. The teacher spins, turns the label into a motion on the board, such as "Schools should require uniforms", and then assigns sides. Spinning for the topic removes the usual complaint that the teacher chose something one side could not win. Many teachers follow the topic spin with a coin flip wheel to decide which team argues for the motion, so both decisions are visibly random.
Setup checklist
- Rewrite the labels as full motions if you want the wheel to produce a ready-to-debate statement.
- Remove any topic that is currently sensitive in your school, and add topics tied to the unit you are teaching.
- Decide the format, time limits, and how sides are assigned before the spin so the class can start preparing straight away.
How to read the result
Each topic has a 1 in 8 chance per spin. The result is a subject, not a position, and it does not tell anyone which side they are on. If you run debates weekly, turn on Remove winner so all eight topics are used before any repeat. The wheel keeps a history of results, which helps when a student asks whether the class has already done School Uniforms this term.
Limits
The wheel cannot judge whether a topic is appropriate for a particular class or whether a student has a personal connection to it. Privacy vs Safety and Social Media Age can go to uncomfortable places quickly with younger students. The teacher frames the motion, sets ground rules, and remains free to re-spin when the result is a poor fit for the room that day.
