Reading Buddy Picker Wheel
Pair students for reading time randomly and fairly. A fun way to create reading partnerships and encourage students to work with different classmates.
Perfect For
Using This Preset Well
This wheel picks a reading partner. The default six entries are placeholders, Partner A through Partner F, and you will want to replace them with student names before using it in class. It selects one name per spin, so making pairs takes two spins per pair: the first spin picks a student, the second picks their buddy, and Remove winner keeps both of them off the wheel until you reset. For a class of 24 that is 12 pairs and 24 spins, which takes about five minutes with the class watching, or less if you spin at your desk beforehand and just announce the pairs. Teachers use it for buddy reading, peer editing, think-pair-share, and any activity where students should work with someone other than their usual friend.
Setup checklist
- Add the full class list with Paste list, one name per line, and delete the six placeholder partners.
- Turn on Remove winner so a student cannot be paired twice in the same round.
- For cross-age buddy reading, make two wheels, one per class, and spin each once per pair.
How to read the result
Each remaining name has the same chance on every spin, so the pairs are random and not matched by ability. With an odd number of students, the last name on the wheel has no partner; plan a group of three before you start rather than discovering it at the end. The wheel does not remember previous weeks, so the same pair can come up again next time unless you check.
Limits
Many teachers pair a stronger reader with a developing one on purpose. This wheel cannot do that. If you need matched pairs, split the class into two lists by level, load each list into its own wheel, and spin once from each. It also cannot know about students who should not be paired for behavioral or personal reasons, so review the results before announcing them.
