Using This Preset Well

This wheel picks which spelling word to practice next. The default list has eight words that trip up many learners: because, friend, beautiful, tomorrow, different, special, favorite, and together. The wheel is really a container for the words you are working on this week. A teacher pastes in the class spelling list on Monday, and each day a student spins, the class writes the word, and someone spells it aloud. At home a parent spins and the child spells the word without looking. Turn on Remove winner and the list becomes a full test in random order, which is harder than a fixed order because the child cannot learn the sequence instead of the spellings. Older students use it the same way for vocabulary lists in a second language.

Setup checklist

  • Replace the eight defaults with this week's list. Paste list takes one word per line, so a list of 20 takes a few seconds.
  • Turn on Remove winner so every word is tested once before the wheel resets.
  • Change favorite to favourite, and check any other spellings, if you teach British English. The defaults use American spelling.

How to read the result

Each word has the same chance per spin, and with Remove winner off the same word can come up twice in a row. That is not a fault, but for a test it is annoying, so use Remove winner. The wheel shows the word on screen when it lands, which means the person spelling should not be looking at the display. Have them face away, or read the word out yourself.

Limits

The wheel cannot hear a spelling or mark it right or wrong. It cannot say the word aloud either, so a reader is needed for young children. Words that appear more than once in the list get more than one chance, so check for duplicates when pasting a long list.
