Using This Preset Well

This wheel picks a quick get-to-know-you question. The default eight are short prompts: Superpower Choice?, Desert Island Item?, Time Travel When?, Favorite Food?, Hidden Talent?, Dream Job?, Pet Peeve?, and Best Advice? Every one of them can be answered in a sentence, which is what you want on the first day of school when you have 28 students and forty minutes. The common pattern is to go round the room: each student spins, answers, and passes the mouse to the next person. With eight questions and 28 students, prompts repeat three or four times, and that is fine, since hearing four different answers to Desert Island Item? is part of the fun. It also works for staff meetings, club meetings, and any new group that needs to talk before it can work. For a longer opener, have each student find out what number human they were when they were born and compare the numbers around the room.

Setup checklist

  • Add ten or twelve more questions if you have a large group and want fewer repeats.
  • Remove any prompt that could put a student on the spot. Hidden Talent? is hard for a shy child in front of a new class.
  • Pair it with the random student picker if you would rather the wheel choose who answers as well as what they answer.

How to read the result

Each question has the same chance on every spin, and consecutive spins are independent, so the same prompt can come up twice in a row. Turn on Remove winner if you want the first eight spins to cover all eight questions. The result is a question, not an obligation; a pass rule keeps the activity low pressure.

Limits

The wheel cannot judge which questions suit a particular age, culture, or classroom, and it cannot tell when a student would rather not answer. Announce a pass rule before the first spin, and remember that the teacher answering first makes it much easier for everyone else.
