Using This Preset Well
This wheel picks a species, often still called a race, for a Dungeons and Dragons character. The default ten are Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, Dragonborn, Tiefling, Half-Orc, Gnome, Half-Elf, and Aasimar. The first nine are the options from the 2014 Player's Handbook, and Aasimar comes from later books. The 2024 rules changed the list, dropping Half-Elf and Half-Orc as separate entries and adding Goliath and Orc, so check which ruleset your table uses and edit the wheel to match. The wheel is used the same way as the class picker: at session zero, to push players out of the human fighter they always make, and by dungeon masters who need a random townsperson or a random body for an encounter. Paired with the class wheel it produces a character concept in two spins, which is enough to start playing at a one-shot.
Setup checklist
- Edit the list to match your edition and your dungeon master's allowed sourcebooks. Add subraces if your table wants them chosen randomly too.
- Remove options that do not fit the setting; a low-magic campaign may not have Aasimar or Tieflings in it.
- Turn on Remove winner if a whole party is spinning and you want a mix of species rather than three elves.
How to read the result
Every option has an equal chance, and the result is a species only. The wheel does not pick a subrace, an alignment, or a background, and it does not care whether the result pairs sensibly with the class the player already rolled. A halfling barbarian is a legitimate spin, and most tables allow one re-spin for a player who dislikes the pairing.
Limits
The wheel knows nothing about your campaign world, its edition, or its house rules, and the default list mixes options that are not all valid together under the 2024 rules. It cannot generate ability scores, features, or lore. Treat the result as a prompt for a character, and let the table have the final say.
