Using This Preset Well

This wheel picks a class for a Dungeons and Dragons character. The default twelve are Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard. That is the full set of twelve classes in the fifth edition Player's Handbook. The wheel is for players who roll up the same kind of character every campaign and want to be nudged out of it, and for tables that build a party quickly at session zero. A common format is one spin per player with Remove winner on, so no two players get the same class and the party ends up covering more roles than it would if everyone chose. Dungeon masters use it to generate non-player characters on the spot, and one-shot organizers use it so nobody spends the first hour deciding what to play.

Setup checklist

  • Add Artificer if your table allows it.
  • Remove classes that do not fit the campaign or that the group has agreed to avoid.
  • Turn on Remove winner when a whole party is spinning so each player gets a different class.

How to read the result

Each class on the wheel has an equal chance. The result is a class only; it does not pick a subclass, a species, a background, or a stat array, and the pairing with a species the player has already chosen may be odd. Odd is often the point of a random character, but the table should agree whether a player can re-spin once if the result is a class they really do not enjoy.

Limits

The wheel knows nothing about your campaign, its edition, or which sourcebooks the dungeon master allows. It cannot balance a party beyond making sure classes do not repeat, and it cannot tell that a group of four with no healer will have a hard time. Treat the spin as a starting point that the table can overrule.
