Wheel of Names vs WheelOSpin vs Spin the Wheel: Which Random Picker to Use

An honest comparison of three browser wheel spinners: where each one is strongest, what WheelOSpin deliberately does not do, and how to choose for classrooms, giveaways, and quick decisions.

People search for “wheel spin”, “wheel of names”, and “spin the wheel” more or less interchangeably, and several tools answer to those names. They are not the same product. This page compares WheelOSpin with the two spinners people most often reach for instead, so you can pick the right one for the job rather than the first result.

We build WheelOSpin, so read the sections about the others as a description of what they are known for, not as a review. Both are mature, well-used tools. Check their current features on their own sites; they change, and this page is dated for that reason.

What each one is for

Wheel of Names is the general-purpose name picker most teachers already know. Its strengths are the account features: save wheels to a login, share them, and come back to the same list from any device. If you run a wheel from three different computers and want it identical on all of them, that model is the right one.

Spin the Wheel style apps (there are several with near-identical names, on the web and in app stores) lean toward games and giveaways: bright, quick, and often with a mobile app alongside the site. If you want a wheel in a native app with notifications and an ad-supported free tier, that is the category to look in.

WheelOSpin is a static, no-account wheel with a large library of preset lists. Every wheel lives in your browser’s storage rather than on our servers, which is a deliberate trade: nothing to sign up for and nothing of yours stored by us, at the cost of sync between devices. It is built for people who want to open a page, paste a list, and spin.

Where WheelOSpin is the better choice

  • Presets. Most of the time you do not want a blank wheel. A random student picker, a yes or no wheel, or a dinner picker is already filled in and editable, with a short guide on the page about what the preset does and does not do.
  • No account, no upload. Lists never leave the browser. For a classroom roster that is often the deciding factor.
  • Honesty about randomness. Results come from the browser’s Web Crypto API, equal entries have equal odds, and where a party preset has a hidden fixed result mode, a visible warning appears while it is armed. Classroom, prize, and raffle presets cannot be fixed at all.
  • Embedding. Any wheel can be placed on another site with an iframe, and the embed route is kept out of search so it does not compete with your page.

Where the others are the better choice

  • Cross-device sync. If you need the same saved wheel on your phone and your classroom PC, a login-based tool wins. WheelOSpin saves per browser.
  • Native mobile apps. We are a website. It works well on phones, but it is not in an app store.
  • Very large lists. Wheels with hundreds of entries become unreadable on any tool, but the account-based tools have had longer to optimize that case.
  • Audited draws. None of the three, including us, is a certified raffle system. If a promotion has legal conditions, use a tool built for that and read our giveaway checklist first.

A note on the misspellings

Search data shows people arriving here after typing “wheelspin”, “wheelspine”, and “whil spin”. If that was you, you are in the right place: WheelOSpin is the site, and the spinner on the home page is the same one used on every preset. Nothing here requires you to remember the spelling.

If you tried the tool and it lacks something you rely on elsewhere, tell us on the contact page. Feature requests that come with a real use case are the ones that get built.
