Secret Santa with a Wheel: Draw Names Without Repeats or Self-Picks
A step-by-step way to run a Secret Santa draw on a spinner wheel: the Remove winner setting, how to handle someone drawing themselves, keeping it secret in a group, and when a wheel is the wrong tool.
A Secret Santa draw has two rules that a plain random pick does not enforce by itself: nobody may draw their own name, and every name must be drawn exactly once. A spinner wheel can do this cleanly if you run it in the right order. This guide walks through the method we use, then covers the two ways people usually get it wrong.
The Christmas gift exchange preset ships with White Elephant turn rules on it, not names. For a Secret Santa draw, you replace those entries with the participants, so start there or on any blank wheel; the steps are the same.
Before the draw
Agree the practical rules in the group first, because a wheel cannot: the spending limit, the date, whether partners may draw each other, and whether the draw will be secret from everyone or just from the recipient. Write the names exactly as people want to be addressed, one per line, and check for duplicates. A name entered twice gets two chances, and a typo creates a person who does not exist.
Paste the list into the wheel with Paste list. Turn on Remove winner so each drawn name disappears from the wheel after its spin. That setting is the whole trick; without it the same person can be drawn twice.
Running the draw in a room
Go around the group in a fixed order. Each person spins once and the name that comes up is the person they buy for. Because Remove winner takes the drawn name off the wheel, the last person is left with the last name, no spin needed.
Two problems will come up:
- Someone draws themselves. Put their name back on the wheel (edit the list and re-add it) and let them spin again. If it happens to the last person, swap with the previous drawer and redo both spins.
- Someone reacts to the result. A groan or a grin gives the game away. Agree beforehand that everyone reads their result silently, or run the draw privately as described next.
Names on the wheel are visible to everyone in the room, so this method reveals the full list of participants (fine) and, if people react, the pairings (not fine). For a truly secret draw, one organizer runs it alone.
Running the draw privately
One person does every spin in a single browser with Remove winner on, writes down each pairing as drawer → recipient, and messages each participant their recipient individually. The organizer knows every pairing, which is the usual compromise; if even that is too much, use a dedicated Secret Santa service that emails pairings automatically.
Do the whole draw in one sitting. The wheel remembers the list in that browser, but it does not keep a log of results, so a half-finished draw cannot be resumed from where it stopped. Write as you go.
Exclusions and couples
If partners should not draw each other, handle it manually: when a person draws their partner, treat it like a self-draw, re-add the name, and spin again. For larger exclusion rules (teams, households) a wheel becomes tedious and a purpose-built tool is the better choice. There is no exclusion setting on WheelOSpin, and we would rather say so than pretend a workaround is a feature.
What the wheel does and does not guarantee
Every remaining name has an equal chance on each spin, chosen with the browser’s Web Crypto API before the animation starts. The gift exchange preset is on the list of wheels that cannot be fixed in advance, so no one can arm a result. What the wheel cannot do is enforce your rules, remember the draw, or verify who took part. Those are the organizer’s job, and a single sheet of paper does them well.
Once the draw is done, the same preset with its original entries is useful on the night itself, for running the swap turn by turn.
